Introduction
When it comes to junk removal Sunshine Coast, it can be an absolute mine field deciding which company to choose.
Especially when on the surface, a lot of companies all seem to do the same thing right?
It can make it even harder to make the right decision if you’ve never hired a junk removal service before as you may not know how it works, what to expect and what it may cost in terms of hard earned dollars and cents.
In this article, I’ll aim to cover all aspects of hiring a junk removal service on the Sunshine Coast and help dispel some myths, provide some guidance and help create a positive experience for you as a customer.
I know myself from past experience hiring tradies, that it can be an absolute nightmare to simply get a hold of them, especially if they’re in a particularly business period of the year and have multiple projects they’re working on.
The process of simply trying to get my retaining walls cleaned this year required a total of four phone calls and two website inquiries just to get hold of one quote.
By that time, I didn’t even bother searching elsewhere as it was exhausting enough just to get it to that point.
The guy turned up, did the work to a decent standard and every one walked away happy.
Anyhow, lets get into it and start with the basics…
Junk Removal: How It Works
Typically when approaching a junk removal service, the operator will likely want to get an idea of a what’s involved in the project at hand.
Whether you’ve inquired online through their website or picked up the phone and dialed, the main points of discussion during your inquiry will revolve around:
-
- The type of junk you have to be removed
-
- How much junk you have to be removed
-
- The access to the junk at your property
-
- Where about you are located on the Sunshine Coast
-
- How soon you want the work done
Once an operator has this information they may look to do two things:
Either come to your property to take a look at the junk or request photo’s to get a better idea.
Once they’ve done either of these two things, they will look to provide a quote and upon your acceptance, arrange a day and time to perform the work.
Junk Removal Sunshine Coast Pricing
Lets explore each off the above points in further detail to help better understand how this may affect cost.
Of course, every operator on the Sunny Coast will have their own way of pricing up jobs but I’ll speak to each area how I know best and what works for us.
It’s also worth noting that different operators will use different vehicles so there may be a lot of variation between one guy operating with just a trailer and a Ute as opposed to two guys using a custom built truck like the one in the image below that we use here at Mango Rubbish Removal.
In general most operators will gauge their pricing on the volume and type of junk.
Some companies will charge per cubic meter or some will go by 1/4 loads, 1/2 loads and full load pricing structures.
When it comes to the type of junk, it usually boils down to three categories which are:
-
- Household Junk
-
- Construction Debris
-
- Green Waste
Usually household waste is the most straight forward to work with and can be much easier for an operator to gauge.
What is classed as household junk?
Think any items around the house such as furniture, fixtures, fittings, clothes, white goods, electronics, kitchen ware etc.
Usually, nine times out of ten, the household junk is the easiest to price up.
Judging the the cubic meter volume of couches, fridges, washing machines and garbage bags is a hell of a lot easier than it is to judge bricks, concrete, soil or palm fronds.
Construction debris can be extremely difficult to judge and often involves a lot of labor so a service provider will typically charge extra to help cover the additional costs.
Not only the construction waste hard to judge, hard on the back and just plain heavy, the construction debris usually comes with higher tip charges due the weight.
This means the overall cost to dispose of construction stuff is way higher.
I have to admit, there’s nothing worse than quoting a large load of construction waste, getting it wrong and then spending the whole day working for no profit and nothing to show for it other than a timely visit to the chiropracter.
The garden waste can also be a very tricky one to price up, especially off photos.
It’s not that judging the cubic meter volume is difficult, it’s just trying to factor in how long the work will take that makes it hard.
Removing five cubic meters of freshly cut bushes may take 15 minutes at one job site whereas five cubic meters of old rotten palms at another site can take 2 hours and 15 minutes!
It can also be very time consuming pulling the waste off at the tip and overall require a lot of labor.
It was these factors that helped me make the decision at Mango to no longer remove garden waste for the simple fact that it’s simply too tricky to provide an accurate quote.
But even though I hate to let customers down when they inquire about green waste removal, on the other hand it allowed us to focus on just one core service offering which is the household junk.
By focusing on just household junk and having one simple pricing structure (instead of three to cover each type of waste) it allowed me to feel confident that my customers were all receiving accurate quotes that were fair for all parties involved.
Location Of Your Junk At The Property
Another factor to consider when hiring a junk removal service is that where you are based on the Coast will play a somewhat minor or major factor in how a company prices the work you need doing.
If you are located somewhere like Maleny, Glass House Mountains or Beerburrum you may find a junk removal service operator will want to add an extra few bucks onto the price to help cover additional time driving and the added vehicle expenses.
These kinds of suburbs above are usually less densely populated and are hard to work into a daily route for an operator meaning they may have to go out of their way to get to you.
If you are located in one of these areas that’s less dense and further away from the coastline then it would work in your favor to do pile up your junk over time and do one big removal to help make it worthwhile and cover the callout fee’s that may apply.
Access To The Junk To Be Removed
Another variation on pricing up a junk removal job will be the access to the waste.
Having to carry junk to a vehicle takes time and labor and will always be factored into a quote.
HINT: A simple way to help reduce the cost of your junk removal service would be to have your pile of junk all in one spot close to the vehicle access.
I’m always having the conversation with customers about the best ways to reduce the cost of the total bill and more often than not, I simply recommend gathering all the junk that you can safely lift and placing it in a convenient place for pick up.
A junk removal guy will always love a job where he gets to turn up, load up and get gone!
For instance, these couches, perfectly positioned to be picked up swiftly from a customers garage…
A quick pickup like this makes for an earlier finish and more time at home with family (which I love)
But remember that if the items you need removing are big, heavy and awkward then save yourself the back ache and simply leave it to the professionals.
