Introduction
Keeping track of what’s accumulating in your yard or driveway can save you a lot of hassle when it’s time to clear it out. Whether you’re heading to the dump, hiring a skip, or opting for to hire a professional service such as Mango Rubbish Removal, knowing what you’re dealing with makes all the difference.
Here are the six most common types of waste you might encounter in your Sunshine Coast home:
Household Rubbish
Commonly known as “general waste” in Queensland, this includes everything that can’t be recycled. It’s typically the type of rubbish you’d toss in your red-lid bin if it would fit but typically were talking things like furniture, toys, clothes, linen.
This type of waste is what 80-90% of our work is here at Mango and for most people, it’s what tends to build up in the household.
Due to our throw away culture and the rise of cheaply made goods that are destined to break and become unusable at rapid pace, this kind of rubbish is probably what’s going to make up most peoples rubbish removal needs.
Hazardous Waste
Hazardous waste includes anything toxic, flammable, or corrosive—think engine oil, batteries, coolant, old cleaning products and the classic rusty old can of WD40.
This kind of waste is usually found in the garden shed and makes up a small percentage of most people’s rubbish removal needs.
At your local Sunshine Coast tip you’ll find certain areas where you can dispose of these things, mostly for free too.
It’s important that this waste gets disposed of as it needs to be processed by specialist companies. Throwing this kind of waste into landfill is terrible for the planet and is outright un-ethical.
If you have this kind of waste at home, do the right thing and dispose of it correctly. If it’s your first time visiting a local tip, speak to one of the workers for advice on where to take your waste.
E-Waste
It’s no secret we’re living in the technological era right?
But did you know, electronic waste needs to be disposed of into appropriate bins at the local tip?
These bins are usually green and can be found scattered around in multiple areas at most tips. At the Buderim tip for example, they have these green e-waste bins located at the recycle area as you first drive in, the pit area and at section C too.
What counts as e-waste? Think TV’s, computers, phones, laptops etc.
An item we see getting disposed of a lot over the last few years is surround sound systems. You know the big subwoofer with the big speakers that go with it?
These things have been replaced over the last few years with slim, sleek soundbar technology meaning plenty of people no longer want these and they don’t even fetch $50 on marketplace.
Recyclable
Recyclable waste refers to items and materials that can be converted into a reusable material, such as cardboard boxes, metals, white goods etc. Each one of these types of waste need to be placed into the appropriate bins at the tip.
The Sunshine Coast tips have partnered with Action Scrap Metal recyclers to ensure that any metal can be disposed of for free and then recycled to reduce waste.
The tip also uses Buderim Air, a local business to de-gas the fridges and freezers to ensure they are safe to be crushed down and recycled for metal.
Even the mattresses that you dispose of at the tip get stripped of their fabric to help recycle the metal springs inside of them.
Construction
Construction waste is typically any excess or old material found after a renovation project.
With the booming construction industry here on the Sunshine Coast, this type of waste is usually and best handled by using a skip bin.
Sometimes construction companies will hire us out for specific reasons such as access issues whereby there is not enough room to place a skip bin such as a fit out on the Mooloolaba Esplenade.
But even with this kind of waste, there can often be recyclable items such as metal brackets and copper piping that needs to be separated.
Construction debris can be hard work to remove as oftentimes it will involve bricks, concrete and plasterboard. On that note, if you are disposing of construction debris you may be able to separate and sort it into different bins at the tip to help reduce cost (plasterboard and concrete especially)
Green Waste
A common type of waste that almost all of us encounter in our Sunshine Coast homes is green waste.
With the tropical climate and the generous block sizes, we see a fair amount of this type of waste here on the Coast especially through the rainy season.
Palm trees look beautiful of course but damn, they sure do love to drop their fronds like ALL the time!
And if you’re lucky enough to have some huge bamboo growing in your garden like me then you’ll know just how fast this stuff grows.
At all of the local tips here on the Sunshine Coast, there is a dedicated section where you can unload your green waste and it doesn’t cost huge amounts either.
Just be sure that no general waste is mixed in with the green waste as you may be up for a hefty fine.
